About Iwaki City
Iwaki City is located in the south-eastern corner of Fukushima Prefecture, adjoining Ibaraki Prefecture to the south. In the east, the city faces the Pacific Ocean and therefore enjoys a relatively temperate climate all year round, with only very little snow in winter.
In the western part of Iwaki stand the Abukuma Highlands ranging in height from 500m to 700m. From there the land gradually descends to the eastern plains, where the Natsuigawa,
the Samegawa and a number of other rivers flow into the Pacific Ocean.
The city has an area of 1,231.34 square kilometres and is one of the largest cities in Japan in terms of land mass. The area of Iwaki City is twice the size of Singapore!
Also with a population of around 350,000, the city is the second most populous city in North Eastern Japan.
