Iwaki City Exchange Relations
UPDATE 2009/03/26
About Iwaki City
Iwaki City has formed four special exchange relationships with other cities - two international
and two domestical.
Friendship City: Fushun (China)
Through the common bond of coal, Iwaki formed a friendship city relationship with Fushun
in northeast China in April 1982. Both cities are continuing to develop closer ties in a variety
of fields including business, medicine, culture and education. Specifically, the Municipal
General Hospital, among others, brings trainees from Fushun to study in Iwaki.
Sister City: Townsville (Australia)
Based on similarities such as modern ports and reputable universities, Iwaki and Townsville
in Queensland, became sister cities in August 1991. Currently, mutual exchange is being
undertaken at a citizen level, mainly in the fields of education and culture.
Parent-Child City: Yurihonjo City (Akita Prefecture)
Iwaki City and Yurihonjo City (formerly Iwaki Town) formed a parent-child relationship in
August 1986 because of their historical connection - both places were once governed by the
Iwaki Clan. The relationship is a very close one, like that of a parent and child. The two cities
are constantly promoting exchange in the areas of culture and local products.
Brother City: Nobeoka City (Miyazaki Prefecture)
A brother city agreement was made with Nobeoka City in May 1997 on the basis of an
historical link - the Edo period feudal rulers of Iwaki, the Naito Clan, were transferred to
Nobeoka in 1747. Iwaki and Nobeoka currently enjoy exchanges in a wide range of fields
such as education, culture and industry.
