Cultural&Educational Facilities

Founded in August 1984, the Iwaki City Coal and Fossil Museum presents a history of the Joban Coal Mines, and has a collection of various fossils found in Iwaki and other fossils collected internationally that help to explain world history.
The Fossil Exhibition Room includes displays of a "Futabasuzukiryu", a long necked dinosaur discovered in Iwaki in 1968; a "Mamenchisaurus", which was the single largest complete dinosaur ever found in Asia, and the "Iwakikujira" (Iwaki whale), which is thought to have lived approximately 4million years ago and was discovered along with approximately 16 others in 1980 when the school grounds of Yotsukura High School were expanded.
The recreation of the Joban coal mines, and the display that shows the development of mining in Iwaki is also a popular attraction.
