Opened in April 1984, the Iwaki City Art Gallery was the first public gallery in Japan, and was focussed on collecting the most modern artworks from around the world.
With 1800 pieces of modern art, the Iwaki City Art Gallery is said to be one of the best in Japan.
The gallery has also received good reviews for the variety of periodical, regional, and themed displays that are held in Event Display Room on the second floor throughout the year, and the musical, dance and other performances that are held in the lobby area.
